<image:caption>Beyond Medication sessions may involve the use of both conventional psychiatric medications and non-medication interventions. Some non-medication interventions are meditation, breathing techniques, lifestyle changes, diet, exercise, herbs, vitamins, and supplements. Medications are one of the mainstays of psychiatric treatment in the United States today. However, medication is only a part of the story. It is essential to also address the underlying causes of the mental distress. That way, we only use medication when we have to, and in its lowest amount. If long term medications are necessary, that is also an option. I have spent over ten years prescribing evidence-based psychiatric medications to severely mentally ill clients. My philosophy is to use psychiatric medications to help you stabilize the symptoms of the illness. This would allow you to be able to participate in activities which allow your mind to heal itself. I avoid prescribing benzodiazepines, which are addictive medications whose use is associated with dementia in the long term.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Psychotherapy, or talk therapy, is a term used for treating mental distress by talking to a mental health provider. There are different forms of psychotherapy, including cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, interpersonal therapy, and others. The effects of psychotherapy typically take longer than psychiatric medications. However, the positive changes of therapy can be long lasting. Some clients take both medications and engage in psychotherapy. I have had rigorous training in various forms of psychotherapy, with an emphasis on psychodynamic psychotherapy and spiritually-informed therapeutic methods.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Accelerated Resolution Therapy or ART is an evidence-based form of psychotherapy for trauma disorders. It uses rapid eye movements to help alter the ways that distressing memories and images are stored in the brain. This can decrease the strong physical and emotional reactions associated with these memories and images. Results of ART can be seen in shorter periods of time than in usual psychotherapies. Further information about Accelerated Resolution Therapy can be found at https://acceleratedresolutiontherapy.com.</image:caption>

<image:title>Services - “I was in a bad relationship, and I really didn’t know it. Working with Dr. Rahiem opened my eyes. I’m now in a better relationship. I used to have a lot trouble with my temper too, and that’s gotten much better. She taught me meditation and gave me medication. We would meet for ‘medication appointments,’ but we did a lot more than that. My life is totally different now. She is a wonderful doctor.”</image:title>

      <image:title>Meet Dr. Rahiem</image:title>
<image:caption>I was walking up and down the aisle of organic meats. I must have gone back and forth at least a dozen times. I kept searching for organic, pasture-raised, grass-fed chicken. I could find the grass-fed beef and even the grass-fed buffalo, but no grass-fed chicken. After a ten-minute exhaustive search, I finally gave up and decided to ask the deli worker behind the counter for help. After a long pause, with sweat on his forehead, he lowered his gaze, and seemed to compose himself before looking back up at me again. I wasn’t sure if he understood what I had said, so I asked him the question again, “Where do you keep your grass-fed chicken?” Again, his face changed color. This time though, he kept his gaze fixed onto me. Seeming to make up his mind about what to say, he finally spoke, “Ma’am. We don’t carry grass-fed chicken.” “Well, why not? Will you be getting some soon?” I responded. “Ma’am. We won’t be getting any. We don’t carry grass fed chicken because, well, ma’am, because chickens don’t eat grass. Maybe some grass, but they can’t live off of grass.” He finally said it. I could see the look of relief on his face, though I did detect a sprinkle of apprehension about how I would take the news. I laughed. Then he laughed. That moment has stayed with me. It showed me that if I was going to eat healthy and teach my clients how to eat healthy, I would have to make sure I learned a lot more.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A warm welcome to you. Thank you for visiting my webpage. Here’s a little info about me. I am of a multi-ethnic background, and grew up in Florida. I have dedicated my entire life to learning. Starting the first grade at the age of four, and spending at over 19 years in school after getting my high school diploma, I’ve learned so much more that I’ve ever thought possible. My most profound learning, however, has come from my own life experiences. I’d like to share a funny story with you. It starts in my favorite organic grocery store in Richmond, Virginia.</image:caption>
